The Society of Mining Engineers (SME) has announced that Dr. Ray Henn has been named as a Distinguished Member. SME established this class of membership to honor those who have made unusually significant contributions to our industry.

Dr. Henn is a Senior Consultant with Brierley Associates in our Denver, Colorado office. Ray is known in the tunneling and underground construction industry as a preeminent authority on grouting techniques and their application on underground construction projects as well as his work with claim evaluations and negotiations. He began his career in the heavy and underground construction industry in the 1970’s. Ray’s consulting assignments range from: construction manager; leading tunnel design teams; serving on dispute review boards and as an arbitrator; being appointed to value engineering teams; and as a member of technical consulting boards.
Dr. Henn teaches grouting techniques and courses in tunneling and underground construction throughout the year.
Ray is past president of American Underground Construction Association; recipient of the 2002 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Roebling Award in Construction Engineering; and SME’s 2008 Outstanding Individual Award. He is the author and editor of three tunnel grouting text books for ASCE and has published more than 25 professional papers.

JAY PERKINS, PE
Eastern Regional Manager
Mr. Perkins' career spans more than 30 years and through his tenure he has designed, managed, and completed a variety of underground projects at the local, national, and international levels. Technical experience encompasses: geotechnical investigations and instrumentation programs; design of deep foundation systems for commercial, institutional and industrial buildings; wastewater treatments facilities, and tower structures. Jay is well versed in design of temporary excavation support and dewatering systems, evaluation of earth embankment dams and slopes, landfills, and cutoff walls. Jay is a registered Professional Engineer in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

ROBIN DORNFEST, PG, CPG
Central Regional Manager
Mr. Dornfest specializes in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering aspects of water and wastewater, dams, oil and gas, transportation, aggregate and hard rock mining, slope stability, tunnels, trenchless, and water supply projects. During Robin's 15-year career he has provided third party reviews as well as serving as an expert witness. Robin has served as the first President of the Northern Section of the Colorado Association of Geotechnical Engineers (CAGE), and is currently a CAGE Board Member and is on the Executive Committee and Treasurer for the Northern Colorado Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Mr. Dornfest is a registered Professional Geologist in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming as well as a Certified Professional Geologist.

Alan L. Howard PG, CEG
Vice President / Western Regional Manager
Mr. Howard is one of the founding partners of Brierley Associates and just completed a multi-year assignment on the highly successful Caldecott 4th Bore Tunnel Project in the Berkeley Hills. He opened our first California office in 2010 and helped negotiate the strategic merger with Berti Lindquist Consulting Engineers shortly thereafter. Alan has over 32 years of experience in engineering geology and hydrogeology, including field experience on a wide variety of projects throughout the United States and overseas. Alan is a specialist in subsurface investigations and geotechnical instrumentation for tunneling, trenchless, geo-structural, and other civil engineering and underground/mining projects. Mr. Howard is a registered Professional Geologist and Certified Engineering Geologist in California.
