Brian Dorwart will join Nico Sutmoller from Aerix Industries at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to discuss the use of use of low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) in annular fill applications. This paper focuses on a case study of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel project that was constructed in 2018 to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage of peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for unpermitted discharges
Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, the three-mile-long, 13-ft excavated diameter tunnel was lined a 126-in diameter Hobas pipe and the annual space was backfilled with LDCC. The paper evaluates data related to the physical properties, manufacture, and technological advances of LDCC, highlighting the material’s unique physical properties of low density, high compressive strength, environmental stability, and high fluidity during placement. In its discussion of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel project, the paper will posit the effectiveness of 50 LDCC as a backfill material in annular fill projects.
