Dr. Lindquist and the Contractors Discuss Building the Deepest Basement in Downtown San Jose

200 Park Avenue Project

Brierley Associates joined the team of LANGAN and Malcolm Drilling to construct a 4 level below grade parking garage beneath a planned 19-story office tower. The 54–58 ft deep excavation, four levels below grade, occupies the entire footprint of the site. Installation of the shoring system installation began in December 2019 and mass excavation was completed in September 2020. Construction of the office tower was completed during the summer of 2022. During the excavation of the basement, the adjacent property and streets needed to be supported by temporary shoring. Several key issues were considered while selecting a suitable shoring system for the project. As the shoring designer, Brierley Associates selected a tied-back cutter soil mixing (CSM) cutoff wall that was approximately 39-inch thick and reinforced with W27 beams spaced 41-inches on center.

Eric Lindquist along with team members Kelli McCurdy, PE, John Gouchon, PE, GE, Serena Jang, PE, GE, from LANGAN, and Rob Jameson from Malcolm discussed the project in the July/August issue of Deep Foundations Magazine.
